Atom is a digital bank, on a journey to have a decision engine led, automation focused underwriting function across all types of lending. We’re there for Retail lending and on our way for Commercial. Our Lending Specialists work as part of the Lending Team and will be responsible for processing lending applications, for retail and commercial products and for both new and existing customers, from initial application submission right through to completion.

We want to make sure we’re offering our customers a first-class service by getting it right the first time, therefore the Lending Specialist’s main responsibilities will be to ensure that all information received in support of an application is accurately assessed within the designated SLAs, the customer and other stakeholders are kept well informed and the system is updated to reflect what you’ve done.

The Lending Specialists’ deal with queries from Atom-selected mortgage intermediaries, property valuers and our legal conveyancers, and therefore need to be able to communicate effectively with all types of people, across a variety of channels (email, telephone, live chat and social media). Sometimes the messages the Lending Specialist’s need to deliver might not be the news they were hoping for, so the ability to be empathetic and professional is essential, whilst also making sure that sensitive and confidential data is managed appropriately at all times. To get off to the right start in this role, we expect Lending Specialist’s to have a good working knowledge of the end to end lending application life cycles, from decisioning right through to completion, general servicing and post completion activities, ideally for both retail and commercial loans. It’s important that our Lending Specialists are proactive, as we will expect the successful applicant to quickly get up to speed with our lending policies, procedures, products and systems. Don’t worry though; we’ll provide plenty of training and support to make sure the successful applicant will have all of the knowledge and skills required to do a great job!

The Lending Team work closely together and are comfortable bouncing ideas or queries off one another, so we’d love you to have the confidence to make your mark and collaborate with others. After all, we’re here to change the future of banking for good so we’ll depend on our Lending Specialists to identify ways we can improve our processes, enhance automation (especially in decisioning), maximise broker and customer experience, improve controls and increase output.

What will your ‘typical’ day look like? (but, no two days are the same at Atom):

  • Delivering excellent service by processing both residential and BBSL applications from submission through to completion accurately and within agreed SLAs.
  • Effectively communicating with customers, intermediaries, stakeholders and 3rd parties to deliver clear and concise updates using Atom’s ‘tone of voice’.
  • Making sure every interaction is as proactive and positive as possible, ensuring all interested parties are kept up to date at every step of the process.
  • Using initiative to make decisions within your delegated authority and making recommendations to the appropriate person(s) where decisions fall outside of your authority.
  • Identifying and reporting any suspicious activity or concerns with the validity of information or documentation provided as part of the application process.
  • Ensuring accuracy and efficiency when reviewing applications and supporting documents and when keying information onto the lending systems.
  • Building great relationships with Atom’s underwriting, business development, customer service and other teams, who you’ll work with really closely.
  • Being proactive, sharing knowledge, ideas and co-creating with others.
  • Looking for opportunities for areas of self-development and improvement.
  • Complying with company lending policies, risk appetite, controls, procedures and regulations.
  • Staying up to date with all mandatory compliance training and learning.
  • Demonstrating you are meeting your key responsibilities through regular Quality Checking and performance management (121s, end of year review).

  • Document assessment capability – covering income verification, ID and other application related documents.

  • Organised – ability to manage conflicting and demanding clients and priorities we need to make sure we meet our Service Levels
  • Educated to at least GCSE level, including Maths and English (essential).
  • Higher education qualifications (desirable).
  • Appropriate professional qualifications (desirable); CeMAP, ACIB, Diploma in Business Banking or equivalents.
