Atom arrives in Newcastle, bringing 600 jobs and creating an additional 30 new roles

  • Atom bank has now fully relocated from Durham to the historic Pattern Shop in Newcastle.
  • The move supports business growth, innovation and the bank’s hybrid working policy
  • Atom is hiring for almost 30 new roles across a variety of expertise.

Atom bank has announced the official opening of its new headquarters in Newcastle.

The move from its previous home in Durham to the historic Pattern Shop marks a new era for the digital bank and its near 600 employees, reinforcing its commitment to the North East and creating significant opportunities for local talent, including almost 30 open job vacancies across a mix of expertise.

The relocation is a strategic step that aligns with Atom’s rapid growth and future vision. The new office, a multi-million-pound investment, will serve as a hub for innovation and collaboration, supporting Atom’s unique four-day working week model and its mission to redefine modern banking.

The move also signals Atom’s dedication to the region, as the digital bank continues to support local initiatives and educational partnerships through its Early Careers Programme. The programme is focused on enhancing social mobility and access to opportunities in the North East. It includes the Atom Futures Fund, which provides financial support to students from low-income backgrounds and those in care, helping them with university applications and transitions, and two AMI Women in Technology Scholarships with Durham University. Additionally, Atom offers a Graduate Scheme, with roles across departments including finance, technology and the wider business to develop future leaders within the company.

Providing opportunities for local talent

To support its continued growth, Atom is actively recruiting for almost 30 new roles across a variety of departments. The new jobs range from technical positions in engineering and data to roles in operations, including 14 customer support openings. These opportunities bring a significant boost to the local economy and provide a chance for job hunters in the region to join one of the UK’s most innovative and highly-rated financial technology companies.

A state of the art hub steeped in history

The choice of the Pattern Shop is deeply symbolic. Built in the 1880s, the Grade II listed building was once a crucial part of the world-famous Robert Stephenson & Co. works, a pioneer of the industrial revolution. It was here that Robert Stephenson and his team designed and built steam locomotives, forever changing the global landscape. Much like Stephenson’s work a century ago, Atom is now at the forefront of a new revolution—the digital banking revolution. The building has been thoughtfully restored into a sustainable, low-carbon office space, perfectly blending its rich industrial heritage with Atom’s forward-thinking, tech-driven ethos, providing an inspiring and collaborative environment for its people.

Mark Mullen, CEO of Atom bank, said: “Our move to the Pattern Shop isn’t just a change of address; it’s a bold statement about our future and our belief in the North East. We’re investing in a space that celebrates our region’s industrial past while providing a modern, flexible, and inspiring home for our people. This new chapter will help us attract top talent and continue to challenge the status quo, proving that a truly innovative and profitable business can thrive right here in the North East.”

Cllr Karen Kilgour, Leader of Newcastle City Council, said: “The announcement of Atom Bank’s arrival to the lovingly restored Pattern Shop was hugely welcome news and it’s fantastic to see their move is now coming to fruition.

“This is hundreds of well-paying jobs being brought right into the heart of our city, on a site steeped in history and heritage with an exciting new chapter ahead of it.

“It’s brilliant to see a company rooted to the North East thriving with its expansion into Newcastle, bringing jobs, growth and opportunity to our city and our communities.”
